The City of Kosciusko is named for the the great warrior and statesman Tadeusz Kosciuszko. Kosciusko is the only municipality in the United States named for this native of Poland. Kosciuszko served as a military engineer during the American Revolution and as an engineer in charge of fortifications he earned the rank of brigadier general bestowed upon him by Congress in 1783. Kosciuszko designed the fortifications at West Point. He was described by Thomas Jefferson as the " purest son of liberty "; and George Washington commented that " He served America with courage and distinction".
